The Well Was Dry...

...and then suddenly you get in a mood to draw naked chicks with swords. I don't know how or why. Possibly because I'm a lifelong stubborn independent artist? The kind who turns down gigs because "I'm just not feeling it". A self-saboteur. A high level amateur with imposter syndrome, but a healthy confidence in his ability to draw shit that - at least - looks pretty cool.

So here I am doodling madly on pieces of note paper and what-not. I get an image, I scratch it out. Sometimes I take these and turn them into more refined-but-lowbrow images. We'll see where this goes.

I wanna do a series of posts about artists whose work I admire. I wanna learn more about each of them as I go and give my thoughts on their work. Because that sounds like a fun thing to do, right?

Frostlick Comic in Color

I decided to colorize this cartoon and it dawned on me that this is Frostlick... a character I've had kicking around in my brain for years. Her genesis was actually 1982 or thereabouts. There was a little fantasy art poster I got from school featuring a white-haired female and a dragon. Of course in that version I doubt she dressed like this. And she was not quite so "robust".

Weird Ones

Here's a couple that are a bit different or odd for me. Like not using lines at all, just flat colors. I experimented with that style years go. It was cool, but ultimately not my jam.

The Isle of Gea, home to the mother goddess Nest and her daughters the Geans, produces a lot of powerful warriors. Here's one. I don't have a name for her but maybe I should give her one. She's Fawn's sister, after all.

I think she's Fawn Rainchild of Pan-Gea, though that wasn't my intention.

Fighting Men of Whitdor

I titled this one "The Fighting Men of Whitdor". I do not remember why. But I do know that Whitdor is the name of a northern region of my fantasy setting Yria, which has never been published or detailed publically to any significant degree. Back of my head idea is to publish it some day as a BX, Labyrinth Lord, Old School Essentials sort of thing. We'll see.

Here's an old Fawn Rainchild pic done in colored pencil. This is not a medium I have dabbled in too much, though I have/had a metric ton of colored pencils in my drawer. What I love about it is you can get a delicate amount of control. What I hate is it takes forever to do.

Bisley kicks ass. Don't even @ me on that. His art has the texture of Frazetta and the tone of Corben and the zero-fucks of Biz himself.

I guess I discovered his work in Lobo's original run or in Slaine: The Horned God. Not sure which came first for me. Lobo was fine, but it was Slaine that blew my skirt up.
